SINK(ING)
Sound Installation

A sound installation that responds to the Cape Town ‘Day Zero’ water crisis in 2018 in the form of an interactive sink. The installation encourages participants to consider the impact that small everyday actions can have on a large global issue.

The sink is built as a speaker that plays a harmonious song. When participants turn a tap on the sink, the tempo and pitch of the song is distorted to aggravate its flow.

The conflict in the music is a metaphor for the impact that water use in our homes have towards our shared environment.

The installation uses the sink as a familiar motif in our daily routines to give shape to a foreign and uncomfortable idea like water scarcity.

The aesthetic design of the sink is tribute to the topographies of Cape Town, as a nod to the communities that are at the heart of the crisis.
